$10 million approved for fire hydrants
Hello - it's Wednesday 1/31/2024 and here's a thread covering today's @CityofCleveland Board of Control meeting for @cledocumenters & @signalcleveland #CLEdocumenters!
09:48 PM Jan 31, 2024 CST
I'm not exactly "live-tweeting" as the meeting took place at 3 pm, but according to my and ChatGPT's interpretation of the Causal Set Theory of Quantum Gravity, events may not occur as fixed moments in time Thus it is- and always has been- time for the Board of Control meeting🌌
@MayorBibb + the heads of various city departments = the board of control They approve vendors for contracts & other spending authorized by @CleCityCouncil The board also signs off on sales of city-owned land Deeper explanation by @AbbeyMarshall: signalcleveland.org/clevelands-boa…

the agenda for today's meeting can be found on the @cledocumenters site here: it includes purchases of fire hydrants, water treatment chemicals, police software, the sale of a few parcels of land AND MORE cleveland.documenters.org/documents/agen…

the first batch of public utilities items were approved pretty quickly and with little discussion or questions. here's some details: 1. approving a subcontractor for the residential pipe protection insurance program. No money spent.
2. approving ~$10M for fire hydrants - the biggest of these contacts went to EJ USA Inc. it caught my eye that two contracts went to two different McWane dbas -- McWane is the big name in water works fittings
3. purchasing over a million bucks worth of potassium permanganate (KMnOâ‚„) Dir. Keane said this was a vital chemical and was not subject to office of equal opportunity minority contracting requirements
It caught my eye that Bonded Chemical was the "lowest and best bidder" despite having the highest bid by quite a bit. It looked like other bidders may have not filed complete bids? It makes me want to know more about the bidding process and what makes a bid "best" if not lowest?
Dir. Keane didn't say what the Potassium permanganate (KMnOâ‚„) was for, but my deep dive research suggests that it's good for killing zebra mussels on water intakes. I also found this interesting wikipedia paragraph about things KMnOâ‚„ isn't good for
next up: public safety requested that their resolution regarding the purchase of police dispatch software be HELD it was not approved or denied at today's meeting. No word on why
and then public works requested that THEIR resolution be held, too -it was a waiver of the Public Auditorium rental fee for the Junior Achievement Student Symposium. It was not approved or denied at today's meeting and no reason why was given
after a grueling 4 minutes, the meeting finally arrived at community development - the sale of three city-owned parcels the city recently stopped selling all parcels for a $200 flat fee and began selling parcels for purchased for development projects at a market rate
the first parcel, at 1911 Abbey Ave near the Gateway Animal Clinic, is being sold for a new residential construction to Di Development for $30,590 this is in ward 3
the second parcel, at 12301 Tuscora Ave on the corner of E. 123 & Tuscora, is being sold for a commercial expansion to Paul McPherson for $3,622.50. Extending the parking lot for the barbershop & fry stand: this is in ward 9 thelandcle.org/stories/paul-m…

and finally, at 4384 Warner Rd, a sideyard expansion for New Life Fellowship Christian Church. Lots sold as part of the sideyard program still go for $200 a pop this is in ward 2, near Mill Creek Falls (Cuyahoga County's tallest waterfall)
A lot can still happen in a 5 minute Board of Control meeting where half the departments scratch their agenda items: including $10 million of fire hydrants and a variety of city-owned property sales.
This concludes my coverage of today's City of Cleveland Board of Control meeting (Somewhere in Time). Have questions? Think I got something wrong? Send any inquiries on the meeting or these tweets to @cledocumenters Or email us at cledocumenters@gmail.com
